DURBAN - Five suspects have been killed in a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday morning.
Police said the gunbattle started when cops tried to arrest the group, suspected of being involved in criminal activities in Chatsworth, south of Durban.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said police opened fire during a confrontation between the gang and officers.
“Our officers were looking for suspects who were terrorising communities of Mpumalanga township, Marrianhill and uMsunduzi area with murders, house robberies and extortion.”
Netshiunda said this was an intelligence driven operation.
“When we arrived here in the early hours of this morning, the suspects opened fire at the police and a shootout [occurred]. Five suspects were shot and fatally wounded, and we are pleased that no office was injured.”
KZN police recovered three guns from the crime scene.
“A search is yet to be done thoroughly, but so far we’ve recovered three firearms and one of them is believed to be a homemade gun we believe that we will find more guns as we search the shack,” explained Netshiunda.
