JOHANNESBURG - A Gauteng crime warden remains in a critical condition while three others are in a stable condition in hospital. A fifth warden has since been discharged from the hospital.
On Sunday, five wardens were attacked by a group of armed men during a patrol in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni.
All of the wardens suffered gunshot wounds.
Speaking outside the Alberton Netcare Hospital, Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, said this incident highlights the growing issue of illegal guns in the province.
“When they were going back to their post that’s when they saw an Avanza that switched on its light when they saw the team (of wardens) and immediately after that they came under attack which is an indication they either disrupted a mission or these people were going to cause more disruption that’s why I said to them, I appreciate their courage.”
