According to the Gauteng government, the wardens approached a suspicious-looking Avanza filled with individuals dressed entirely in black.

As they approached, the occupants pulled out automatic rifles and fired at the wardens.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed gratitude that there were no fatalities.

“I appreciate that they took a bullet on behalf of all of us because you don’t know where eleven to 20 people carrying AK-47s would have ended if they were not disturbed by these young men and women. I wish them a full recovery and have asked the team to ensure the necessary protocols were followed.”

The shooting occurred near an informal settlement in Daveyton known for harbouring illegal miners (zama zamas). The motive is still under investigation.
