ActionSA Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Xolani Khumalo hands himself over to police

ActionSA’s mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, Xolani Khumalo, has handed himself over to police in Katlehong.

This is in connection to an assault charge opened against him in December.

According to ActionSA, Khumalo was part of a police drug bust when the alleged assault took place.

A number of ActionSA supporters have gathered outside the police station to show support for Khumalo.

ActionSA's national chairperson, Michael Beaumont, said that the party is fully behind Khumalo.

“We are proud of Xolani because he is not a man who fears accountability. He heard rumours about this arrest and he presented himself to the police and said I welcome accountability. People who don’t break the law welcome accountability in our country.”

KHUMALO OFFICIALLY CHARGED

Khumalo has officially been charged with assault and the pointing of a firearm.

ActionSA supporters, along with other civil society organisations, have come out in their numbers to show support for Khumalo.

The general mood in the crowd is that Khumalo is being punished for taking on drug dealers.

“We just finished with the process here in Katlehong police station. Xolani is now detained. He will be appearing in court today, so we will be moving to the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court for this process to continue.

“I was with him throughout, up until they put him in the cells. It’s a process the police need to go through - we appreciate that,” said ActionSA’s Gauteng chairperson, Funzi Ngobeni.

The crowd has now moved to the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court, where they are hoping Khumalo will make his first appearance.
