Gauteng records over R4.2bn in irregular expenditure for 2024/25 financial year

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng has recorded over R4.2 billion in irregular expenditure for the 2024/25 financial year.
Finance MEC Lebogang Maile revealed the figure at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Sunday.
This comes despite more than half of the province’s departments and entities receiving clean audits.
Maile said the Gauteng provincial government is working to strengthen financial management and compliance.

He said the province is focused on improving oversight and automating supply chain management processes to reduce tender-related violations and improve transparency.
"In the 2024/2025 financial year, Gauteng provincial government departments incurred R4.2 billion in new irregular expenditure. The province is dedicated to enhancing compliance with supply chain management regulations by automating supply chain management."
Maile also noted that while most departments processed 90% of invoices within the required 30 days, the departments of Agriculture and Health lagged behind.
The MEC said the focus now is on ensuring funds are properly managed and directed to where they are most needed.
