The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Transport has confirmed the arrest of a scholar transport driver who fled the scene of a crash in Impendle on Monday.
The crash left at least 20 learners injured.
It is understood that the driver lost control of his unroadworthy minibus taxi, plunging it off the Kwakhetha bridge on P127.
Investigators have since tracked him down and uncovered that he did not have a valid driver's license
He also violated the National Land Transport Act by transporting learners without a professional driving permit (PDP).
The Department of Transport’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, explained: "The driver is in possession of a learner's license only. I have mandated our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate to be firm and work with traffic departments in Impendle Local Municipality and many other municipalities.”
