Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says warring taxi associations in Cape Town must focus on peace talks rather than taking government to court over taxi route closures.

The mobility department has implemented route shutdowns along the Mfuleni and Khayelitsha to Somerset West corridor for the next 30 days.

These measures are aimed at preventing the taxi-related killings which have claimed the lives of at least 10 people in recent weeks.

Taxi organisation CODETA is unhappy with the mobility department's decision to close the taxi routes and has approached the court to stop the route shutdowns.

Sileku said that while it was the association’s right to go the legal route, the decision to do so is misplaced.

"We are in a democratic country, so any person has a right to approach the courts. But I would suggest that they put more effort to try and resolve this instead of approaching the courts."

Seven minibus taxis have been impounded for illegally operating on the closed routes.
