There are calls for the City of Ekurhuleni to launch a forensic investigation into EMPD deputy chief, Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, over allegations that he’s linked to suspected underworld figure, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.
Mkhwanazi is accused of providing blue lights to Matlala, which were fitted to his private vehicles in 2023.
He has also been named in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry for allegedly granting undue and repeated favours to the alleged crime boss.

The allegations have sparked concern that the top cop has been misusing his position and power.
Two years ago, Matlala’s partner posted a video on Instagram showing her driving her children to school in a vehicle fitted with blue lights.
It was later revealed that the lights belonged to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and were allegedly provided to Matlala by EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
Following an investigation, police watchdog IPID recommended that disciplinary action be taken against Mkhwanazi.
In response, two political parties in the Ekurhuleni city council, IRSASA and the ATM, have tabled a motion for his suspension.
The two parties are also requesting a forensic probe into his alleged ties to Matlala, despite the IPID report already pointing to misconduct.
The city council is now holding a closed-door meeting to determine whether Mkhwanazi should be suspended.
