National police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, has reiterated his claim that his deputy, Shadrack Sibiya, and suspended police minister, Senzo Mchunu, were working hand-in-hand to protect criminal syndicates in Gauteng.

Masemola concluded his two-day testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday.

He testified at length on various issues relating to what he called the illegal instruction to disband the political killings task team, Sibiya's suspension and the arrest of two alleged underworld figures in Gauteng, who he claims have links to Sibiya and Mchunu.

On 6 December last year, police conducted two operations, arresting alleged underworld figure, Katiso "KT" Molefe and raiding the home of tenderpreneur, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.

During the raid on Matlala’s premises, they confiscated his phone, which later revealed the intricacies of how far the corruption within the criminal justice system allegedly extends.

During his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, Masemola claimed that Matlala’s phone revealed links to his deputy, Sibiya, and suspended police minister, Senzo Mchunu.

He also claimed that there was a clear motive to disband the task team to protect Matlala and Molefe’s alleged criminal empires.

"There was no other motive but to prevent the investigations against the cartels in Gauteng that are involved in murder, drugs and so on."

Masemola concluded his two-day testimony on Tuesday afternoon, with the next witness set to testify on Thursday.
