This December, the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra will bring global and local brilliance to South African stages. With conductor Marin Alsop, cello sensation Abel Selaocoe and percussionist Bernhard Schimpelsberger, the tour promises a groundbreaking fusion of sound and purpose.
Under CEO Bongani Tembe, this “super orchestra” is on a mission to use music as a tool for transformation, nation-building and healing.

Speaking at the launch event, Tembe said the orchestra’s lineup represents the “cream of the crop”, with about 10% of the talent being top South African musicians who have made their mark on the world stage. He shared a touching story about wooing back South African prodigy Peter Schuman, now the concertmaster of a world-class orchestra. “I said, ‘This is the vision of Mzansi, I wanted him to lead it,’” Tembe recalled.

Marin Alsop, who could not attend in person, sent a message of excitement about the tour. “This is a tour that’s called Voices of Home,” she said. It’s a celebration of “the wonderful music of South Africa and also the incredible power of global collaboration.”

She’s particularly thrilled to share the stage with Abel Selaocoe, whom she called a “voice of the future,” performing his vibrant cello concerto Four Spirits.

But the orchestra’s impact goes far beyond the stage. In just three years, it has invested over R70 million into the hands of artists, with 75% of its budget directly supporting youth orchestras and other initiatives. This has been a game-changer for many who had never before received government funding.

Tembe has a bold vision for the future, he wants playing for the Mzansi National Philharmonic to be as big a dream for young people as playing for the Springboks.
