The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed an investigation into allegations that Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi extended undue favors to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala.
Mkhwanazi is accused of giving Matlala special treatment, including fitting the alleged crime boss’s personal vehicles with blue lights.

Last week, the Ekurhuleni council referred the matter to the city manager after Mkhwanazi was named at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry for his alleged links to Matlala.
Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza has told EWN the city manager will soon announce a decision on the allegations against the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD)’s top cop.
Mkhwanazi was granted special leave after being implicated at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry over his alleged ties to Matlala.
Mkhwanazi was previously suspended following claims that he supplied Matlala with EMPD blue lights, but he was reinstated and later promoted.
Xhakaza said the metro wasn’t ignoring allegations that the EMPD has been compromised and infiltrated by crime syndicates.
"It is I, as the mayor, who asked the acting city manager to commission an investigation. I’m sure the commission will very soon shed light and give us an idea of what has been happening."
The allegations of the criminal infiltration of the EMPD were raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The commission will resume hearings into claims of wider corruption in the justice system on Monday.
