Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie is holding off on his intention to resign from the Government of National Unity (GNU) on Tuesday morning, pending a meeting with African National Congress (ANC) leadership Tuesday night.

McKenzie called time on the GNU last week due to an impasse with Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero over a mayoral committee seat.

The PA wants Kenny Kunene back in the job as transport MMC after he was once again sworn in as a councillor on Friday.

This, after he was cleared in a legal investigation following his resignation two months ago, when he was embroiled in the scene of the arrest of murder-accused Katiso Molefe.

McKenzie said he's not making idle threats about resigning as the minister of sport, arts and culture, neither about withdrawing the PA from the ten-party GNU and all its office bearers from coalitions at the provincial and local government levels.

“The secretary general of the ANC is right; one shouldn’t make threats. But what other option did we have left? This wasn’t a threat; this was a statement of intent.”

In a Facebook Live to address supporters on Monday night, McKenzie said his decision has not been prompted by how the coalition government is functioning.

“I can’t expect other people to resign and I remain. So, I just wanted to make it clear: there’s no trouble in the GNU. The GNU is solid. The GNU is going through its best phase.”

McKenzie said the ANC has systematically been breaking their partnerships in municipalities by voting out its office bearers.

After refusing to appoint the party's Liam Jacobs as the transport MMC to replace Kunene, McKenzie said the failure of the Johannesburg council to provide water to the communities of Westbury, Newclair and Coronationville has been the last straw.
