WATCH | Ekurhuleni mayor defends due process in handling of Mkhwanazi suspension row

Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has urged patience, saying the allegations against Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi must be properly ventilated at the Madlanga Commission.

Xhakaza stressed that many of the incidents in question date back to 2022 and 2023, before he took office.

He said he had instructed the city manager to commission an internal investigation to establish what happened, particularly around the handling of a possible suspension in 2023.

According to Xhakaza, a preliminary audit has already highlighted shortcomings in that process. He emphasised that the council cannot “fix a wrong with another wrong” and must follow due process to ensure accountability.

“The correct action is to allow the commission to do its work, while the city finalises its own investigation into what may have gone wrong in 2023,” said Xhakaza.
