The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said that French police probing Nathi Mthethwa's passing have not yet found a cause of death.
News of Mthethwa's death broke on Tuesday, after his body was found at a hotel in Paris.
Speaking on 702's Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa, the department's Chrispin Phiri also revealed that at the time of Mthethwa's passing, he did not have a protection detail.
It also came to light that Mthethwa was attending a cocktail party at the hotel that same evening.
He previously served as the minister of police before being moved to the sport, arts and culture portfolio and prior to his death, was the ambassador to France.
"We, at this stage, can't set a timeline for French authorities, but we understand that they are leaving no stone unturned and we hope that possibly by the end of the week there will be a lot more clarity."
