SA loses 230,000 jobs: ‘This is a continuation of a trend’ – Economics lecturer

South Africa is facing yet another employment crisis, with 230,000 jobs being shed.
These job cuts are happening across multiple sectors, worsening the already devastating unemployment rate.
Adams says these figures are unfortunately not surprising, as we have seen low growth in the country for some time, and not enough investment in the economy.
“As long as we have low economic growth, we cannot expect significant job increases. What we have seen now with these job losses is just a continuation of a trend, which has been happening now for the past several quarters in Africa.”

He adds that we can see a direct link between job losses in the NGO sector to the Trump administration withdrawing support.
With job losses in the public sector, he says these were largely part-time jobs which could be a result of efforts to consolidate public expenditure.
