The Patriotic Alliance and African National Congress (ANC) are expected to have a follow-up meeting on Thursday to continue discussions regarding Kenny Kunene’s reinstatement as a Johannesburg mayoral committee member.
But the talks will now include proposals put forward by both parties on how they can work together in other municipalities like the Ekurhuleni and Tshwane metros.
The follow-up discussions come after the Patriotic Alliance withdrew its threat that its leader, Gayton McKenzie, would leave the Government of National Unity (GNU) should Kunene not be reinstated.
The Patriotic Alliance said its meeting with the ANC on Tuesday was successful and dealt with issues that affect the Gauteng province and not just Kunene’s reinstatement.
Kunene said follow-up discussions would include how the two parties could work together in other municipalities in the province.
He said this would happen before the end of the eek.
"We are going to have a follow-up meeting before Friday because the proposals the ANC has put on the table, we have to discuss with the broader NEC members. And then we will then get back to the ANC before Friday on our response to the proposals that are on the table. But we emphasise that the meeting went very well for the PA and we are happy with the posture of the ANC."
Kunene also told supporters that the party would not be going ahead with its mass resignations of its elected officials from coalitions, including the GNU.
