The unions said that the department has failed to address the serious concerns of corruption across its facilities.

They also raised issue with what they say is the unlawful dismissal of employees

NEHAWU Gauteng Secretary Mzikayise Tshontsi said, "We are here, therefore comrades, to say we want this department to insource security services. And other services that are outsourced, that are used as a source of corruption by this department. Comrades, if you go around in our province, there are many contracts that have been awarded. That have led to projects being initiated. You go to Citibank district hospital, you go to Kopanong, you go to Liratong, you go to George Bukari, you go to Steve Biko, their situations are the same."

He added that the unions do not take the MEC's absence from the demonstration lightly.
