BOSA (Build One South Africa), RISE Mzansi, and the GOOD Party have announced a new political alliance called "Unite for Change", ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Mmusi Maimane, leader of BOSA, described the initiative as a "special purpose vehicle" designed to present a credible alternative to voters through collaboration and unified candidates.
"It's a pre-coalition pact that says let's work together to bring South Africans together to contest elections. We're inviting more parties to come together."
While "Unite for Change" will be registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as a political party, Maimane explains that its member organisations will retain their individual identities in Parliament and legislatures.
He clarifies that this is not a merger, but rather a pre-coalition pact aimed at maximising electoral strength through shared values, transparent candidate selection, and community-focused leadership.
"I think pre-coalitions are best before a local government election rather than in a national government election because then you can ultimately decide where the strength is, who the best is, and it's far easier to manage."
The alliance has yet to say who will lead the new formation or who its mayoral candidates will be.
Maimane downplayed concerns over leadership structure, stating the focus should be on competent local candidates and service delivery rather than national-level power dynamics.
Mmusi Maimane was in conversation with 702's Bongani Bingwa.
