Assets seized: Tembisa Hospital tender mogul faces SIU raids

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has confirmed it is conducting two simultaneous raids in different provinces, targeting properties belonging to the Tembisa Hospital tender mogul, Hangwani Maumela.

Maumela is linked to the SIU’s investigation into the alleged looting of Tembisa Hospital through irregular tenders, which were first exposed by the late whistleblower Babita Deokaran.

SIU officials are currently at Maumela’s luxurious Sandton home, seizing assets including high-end vehicles and furniture.

At the same time, the unit has confirmed that another team is conducting a raid at a car dealership in Mpumalanga.

Trucks are lined up outside Maumela’s luxurious three-storey mansion in Sandton, as SIU teams load his high-end vehicles onto the trucks.

Dozens of law enforcement officials are also inside the property, conducting a thorough search of the lavish residence. There has been no sight of Maumela yet as the SIU sweeps through his property.

Meanwhile, SIU officials have also swooped on a car dealership in Witbank, but refused to divulge if it is linked to the investigation into Maumela’s alleged syndicate.

SIU spokesperson Ngwako Motsieng has, however, remained tight-lipped about the details of the operation.

"Yes, we can confirm that there was an operation in Witbank; however, we were not able to take the cars," Motsieng said. "Like I said, we can't talk further until the legal processes are finalised."
