People have been complaining about the exorbitant costs of parking at OR Tambo airport.

Customers stuck with four-figure fees after parking at OR Tambo Level 2

Travellers at OR Tambo International Airport have been hit with shocking parking bills after leaving their cars on Level 2 of Parkade 2, where rates are R60 per hour.

One driver returned from a short trip to Cape Town to find a R4,500 charge for three days of parking, sparking outrage over unclear signage.

He said he wasn't aware of the exorbitant costs of parking overnight and that there was no guidance on what can be done to avoid these charges.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) insist that there is plenty of signage and an audible message at the entry boom to warn customers of these charges.

“Parking fees applied are in line with clearly displayed tariffs, and all efforts are made to communicate these effectively to users. We encourage motorists to review signage and use available support channels should clarification be required.”

However, many customers disagree, saying the signage is not clear at all and only says ‘parking not recommended,’ without any warning of the costs.

“If you are going to be parking at the airport for a day or two, do not make the mistake of entering parkade 2 level 2,” warns consumer journalist Wendy Knowler.
