South Africa’s Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system must move beyond financial stabilisation and start delivering measurable results.
This is according to Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela, who briefed the media on Saturday following the tabling of the department’s 2024/25 Annual Report in Parliament earlier this week.

Manamela stated that the government’s focus in the year ahead is to build a PSET system that is integrated, functional, and guided by ethical leadership.
He added that his department will intensify efforts to strengthen governance, monitoring, and evaluation across all institutions, while ensuring data integrity, credible evidence, and accountability.
Manamela elaborated: “And our priorities will be to ensure that we build a fit-for-purpose department and improve in some of the areas where we've been doing quite well in order to meet the needs and expectations of the sector.”
