President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed claims that he is related to alleged tender fraud mastermind Hangwani Maumela.

Maumela has been identified by the Special Investigating Unit as a key figure in a criminal syndicate accused of looting R2 billion through Tembisa Hospital tenders.

The siu raided his home last week, seizing luxury vehicles from his three-storey mansion in Sandton.

During a media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria today (Monday), the Presidency denied any link between Ramaphosa and the alleged fraudster.

There have been claims that alleged tender fraud mastermind Maumela is Ramaphosa’s nephew.

However, Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has refuted the allegations, saying Ramaphosa and Maumela are not related.

“The president maintains that he has no personal relationship with Maumela. He is not related to him, except that he was married to his aunt many years ago.”

Magwenya said Ramaphosa has never been to Maumela’s home.

“We do reject sternly that the president may have been visiting Maumela’s house. That is very far from the truth.”

Companies linked to Maumela are said to have been irregularly awarded r820 million in Tembisa Hospital tenders.
