The resumption of academic activities at the University of Fort Hare’s Alice campus still hangs in the balance amid unresolved tensions between students and the institution’s management.
The main campus in the Eastern Cape was temporarily shut down last week after it was rocked by violent student protests, which resulted in damage to property and some injuries.
Disgruntled students are calling for Vice-Chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu’s resignation over what they have labeled governance issues.
An interim court order has since halted calls by the university for students to vacate the premises, pending a hearing on the matter this week.
Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela addressed the disruptions at a media briefing at the weekend.
"I have directed the university council and management to put in place all necessary measures to reopen the institution and allow teaching and learning to continue, including online modalities where required."
Manamela said he was also called for the university’s council to reflect on the dispute.
"Including the state of governance and leadership, the role and status of the SRC, the institutional culture of the university, the concerns raised about the vice-chancellor’s contract and the insourcing of workers."
