FIFA is facing backlash after revealing that tickets to the 2026 World Cup would be subject to dynamic pricing.
This refers to a practice where a product’s price is adjusted in real-time based on demand, supply, and competitor pricing.
The first phase of ticketing opened on 1 October, and the second phase will begin on 27 October.
Michael Brunskill, head of communications at the Football Supporters' Association, says pricing will likely hit extraordinary levels.
“The prices for the final range from about $2,000. It’s a massive jump in pricing on recent World Cups.”
He adds that pricing fans out takes away from the essence of the World Cup being a globally celebrated tournament.
“America is a very wealthy nation, and I am sure that they could pack out a stadium of 80,000. But is that really a global celebration of football if it’s just the richest people sitting in a stadium politely clapping? I don’t think that’s what the World Cup is about,” he says.
“It’s just an outrageous pricing scheme by FIFA, and they really need to think of not just money but the people who love the game around the world."
