FlySafair says it has no choice but to pass on the spike in fuel costs to consumers through temporary fuel surcharges, which will be in place from Wednesday until May.

The airline says price increases are a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has seen a key oil shipping transit through the Strait of Hormuz shut down.

In a statement, FlySafair said the impact on the jet fuel has been immediate.

It says jet fuel has spiked by 70 percent in a week.

On Monday, the price of Brent crude surged past the $100 mark before settling down again to $91 per barrel on Wednesday afternoon.
