DA believes Lerato Madyo could reveal the mastermind behind Deokaran's murder

The Democratic Alliance (DA) believes an investigation into former Gauteng health chief financial officer Lerato Madyo could reveal the mastermind behind Babita Deokaran's murder.

Deokaran was assassinated after blowing the whistle on corruption and tender fraud at Tembisa Hospital in 2021.

In September, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) released a report revealing that money stolen through tenders is more than R2 billion.

On Thursday, the DA laid seven charges against Madyo at the Johannesburg Central police station.

The list of charges includes failing to report corruption, theft and fraud, conspiracy to commit an offence, and failing to stop irregular expenditures.

“We think she’s the central figure and that the big fish are getting off. So far, we haven’t seen criminal charges. We laid criminal charges because the DA wants to get the ball rolling. So far, it’s been lower-level officials being charged on disciplinary charges and we not getting to syndicate head.”
