NPA welcomes 25-year prison sentence for teen who murdered Deveney Nel

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the 25-year prison sentence handed down to a teenager who murdered a 16-year-old girl at Overberg High School in Caledon.
The 18-year-old was 17 when he stabbed to death his fellow learner, Deveney Nel, and hid her body in a storeroom at the school in August 2024.

The boy entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the State.
"The court convicted and sentenced the accused to 25 years direct imprisonment for Nel's murder and 12 months direct imprisonment for an attempt to defeat the course of justice.
"The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently and declared him unfit to possess a firearm,” said NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila.
