Over 100 people have been arrested for drunk driving in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday night.
Officers from the provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate made the arrests during operations in Newcastle.
The campaign forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce road accidents and lawlessness.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has confirmed that 106 motorists were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
They are expected to spend the weekend behind bars before appearing in court on Monday.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has cautioned drivers about the consequences of drinking and driving.
"Once again, the MEC has warned motorists. Drink, drive, and earn yourself a criminal record, as well as detention in holding cells for a maximum of 48 hours before you are granted bail or before your next court appearance."
Sibiya added that accidents, mostly caused by drunk driving, have destroyed many lives.
"These individuals have inflicted suffering on many families, with widows, orphans, and people living with disabilities created."
The department said similar operations will continue across the province into the festive season.
