Run-flat tyres are specially engineered with reinforced sidewalls that allow a vehicle to continue driving at a reduced speed for a limited distance after a puncture.

According to Aziz Daniels of Goodhope Tyres in Woodstock, Cape Town, the price premium for run-flat tyres varies by vehicle. “Specific vehicles come standard with run-flat tyres,” he explains.

These tyres are commonly found on models like BMWs with 19-inch wheels and Mercedes-Benz vehicles with 17-inch wheels, with prices typically ranging from R2,500 to R3,000 per tyre.

While not all cars are equipped with them by default, run-flat tyres can be fitted to a vehicle, as long as they are manufactured and available for that particular model.
