The Ukraine ambassador to South Africa says he believes South Africa could still have a historic role to play in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Dr Olexander Scherba was appointed Ambassador of Ukraine in July.

His comments come at a time of improved relations between Ukraine and South Africa.

The relationship between the two countries has seen a notable shift from the early days of the conflict when South Africa faced criticism for refusing to condemn Moscow's invasion of Ukraine outright.

"The only thing we need right now is for South Africa to boldly act in the interests of peace," says Scherba, suggesting leaders offer South Africa as a meeting point for negotiations.

"Zelenksy has showed readiness to come and negotiate at any place in the world expect for Moscow and Minsk."

But Scherba says the issue right now is not the venue for negotitions.

"The problem is, President Zelensky suggested to stop fighting along the current line, and President Putin rejected that."
