`Sikelela: The Enoch Sontonga Story' is a short biographical film that honours the life and work of the composer behind the hymn, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika.
It is a cinematic and musical celebration of the country’s national treasure, says writer and director Lungile Themba, who also plays Sontonga.
He adds that Sontonga’s life was not well documented, so it was important to tell his story.
“There was so much that could have been, but his life was quite short, and there was no documentation about his life and who he actually was.”
Themba says this is an opportunity to educate people about their history, many of whom still don’t know the origins behind the national anthem.
“It’s important for people to know who they are and where they come from. If you are singing the national anthem, you need to know where it comes from," he says.
The premiere will takeplace at Ster-Kinekor Cinema in Sandton City on 2 November.
It will include an exclusive viewing of the short film, along with live performances of the upcoming soundtrack by Thema, opera singer Ann Masina, and a live band.
Tickets are available on Webtickets here.
