Red Bull Flugtag returns to Cape Town's V&A Waterfront on Saturday

Keep your eyes on the sky this weekend as Red Bull Flugtag makes its long-awaited return to Cape Town this Saturday, 2 November, at 11am at the V&A Waterfront – the first event since 2012.

Teams will once again showcase their creativity by designing and building homemade, human-powered flying machines, which they’ll launch off a high ramp and into the water below.

The competition will be judged on three key factors: the creativity of the design, the distance achieved during flight, and the team’s overall performance. Each pilot will take the plunge, quite literally, hoping their creation soars rather than sinks.

Around 50 teams are set to take part in this year’s event, ranging from groups of friends to corporate teams, promising a fun and diverse spectacle for spectators.

Gates open at 10am at Jetty 1, and the event will be broadcast live on big screens throughout the V&A Waterfront.

Pat Davidson, a Red Bull athlete, five-time South African aerobatics champion, current World Champion in Air Race X and judge of Red Bull Flugtag said: "There's no standard, I've seen flying toilets... to things with wings and things with a guarantee that it won't fly, so there's definitely no standard – but it's definitely all a good laugh to say the least."

While the challenge is all about flight, other criteria for winners will be scored according to their team's theme, presentation, a skit which can be a dance, song or both where the choreography is judged, and crowd appreciation.

"They're all going to fly, it just depends on how far... but the majority of them don't go very far at all."

Davidson will also be flying "something different" around midday, so stick around to "see what a real airplane can do."
