Panic and chaos erupted aboard a train in England when a man armed with a knife began stabbing passengers seemingly at random.

According to international correspondent Adam Gilchrist, witnesses described scenes of terror as a blood-soaked passenger ran through the carriages shouting warnings that the attacker was 'stabbing people'.

"The kind of terror, imagine being in your seat on a train, you've got nowhere really to go. People are locking themselves in toilets or grabbing laptops as protection."

Gilchrist reports that a train guard is being hailed as a hero after stepping between the attacker and a woman, suffering life-threatening injuries in the process. The train driver quickly diverted the train to an unscheduled station, where emergency services arrived within minutes.

Police subdued the suspect with a taser after the man reportedly shouted 'kill me' as they approached.

Eleven people were seriously injured, and authorities say the man remains in custody as investigators work to determine his motive.
