Party leaders in GNU declare coalition to be united and strong

Sixteen months since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU), the leaders of the ten political parties have declared the coalition to be united and strong.

But they say greater urgency and action is needed to implement government programmes, streamline processes and depoliticise the public service. 

The party leaders concluded a two-day retreat at the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng on Monday, where they reflected on the priorities outlined in the statement of intent.

The hush-hush, closed-door meeting follows complaints from some political leaders that they have not been meeting often enough. 

They’ve now resolved to do so regularly, to provide strategic political direction to the work of the GNU. 

Among the priorities identified is to develop a food security plan to address dire hunger affecting many communities, a strategy for youth skills development and work experience opportunities, and to intensify the fight against gangsterism and organised crime.

Political leaders say they’ve also discussed ethical leadership in the criminal justice system.

This comes against the backdrop of two inquiries into police corruption currently underway, and the start of a current recruitment process for a new head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Furthermore, the GNU party leaders have committed to improving oversight and coordination of state-owned enterprises and setting minimum standards for board appointments.

Illegal immigration and strengthening border management also featured on the agenda.
