Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said that the Madlanga Commission and Parliament's ad hoc committee investigations will give the police an opportunity to reset.

Cachalia said the two inquiries in Pretoria and in Parliament were raising the right questions and will help expose the root of the problems in the police.

The acting police minister on Monday briefed the National Assembly police portfolio committee on the police’s annual report.

He said that the question of whether the South African Police Service was in crisis was one that needed to be examined carefully.

He said that while the police had achieved consecutive unqualified audits, he said that corruption remains a problem.

Cachalia said that the two inquiries would help give the police a chance to start over.

"It will present us with a difficult moment. I think it provides us with an opportunity to reset. Many of the issues raised in the committee today are precisely the right ones that will require attention going forward."

He said this must also address the low morale in the police.

"For any reset, we have to rebuild the morale."

Cachalia will be back in Parliament to give evidence before the ad hoc committee investigating police corruption after Deputy Minister Polly Boshielo on Tuesday.
