Corruption accused IEC Commissioner Nomsa Masuku's term expires

Corruption accused Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) Commissioner Nomsa Masuku will not return to her post at the end of her term.

The terms of three commissioners expired on Tuesday: Masuku, Mosotho Moepya and Dhaya Pillay.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has since re-appointed the latter two.

Masuku was arrested in June last year on corruption charges unrelated to her job at the IEC.

She stands accused of defrauding Standard Bank to the tune of R1.2 million when she headed the institution’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) unit.

Masuku has served as an IEC Commissioner since 2018, overseeing three general and local government elections.

IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Sheburi welcomed the prompt filling of commissioner vacancies.

“The commission extends its gratitude to the Chief Justice and the panel that she constituted to expedite the process, and working diligently to ensure she could present her recommendations to Parliament, for parliament to process and, in turn, submit to the president for consideration and decision.”

Joyce Pitso has been announced as the new commissioner, with her seven-year term beginning on Wednesday.
