Head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) Andrea Johnson has slammed KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for claiming there are "rogue" elements in her organisation.

She said Mkhwanazi could have endangered the lives and the work of IDAC officials by claiming they are rogue without any evidence.

Johnson was responding to questions from members of Parliament (MPs) on Thursday before the Parliament ad hoc committee investigatingallegations of police malfeasance made by Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi, at the start of the hearings, told members that IDAC had arrested his close ally Dumisani Khumalo to hamper organised crime investigations.

He also told the committee that certain IDAC investigators had gone rogue and arrested Khumalo over what he called an HR matter

Khumalo also told the Madlanga Commission on Thursday that his arrest was about "retaliation".

But Johnson said Mkhwanazi was irresponsible to label IDAC officials as rogue.

“There are no rogue members at IDAC and I’m sure that General Mkhwanazi should have known that putting such a word out there is really irresponsible in the absence of any evidence. It has cost people their lives, it has cost agencies their mandate. There are no rogues.”

Johnson said not everyone in the police or IDAC are bad apples, and they will deal with anyone found to be on the wrong side of the law.
