Mapiyeye said there are at least five criminal cases registered against three members of the former Special Weapons and Tactical (SWAT) unit.
The unit was under the leadership of acting EMPD head Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, who is accused of having links to criminally accused tender tycoon Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
One of these cases relates to the 2022 murder of a man in Brakpan, whose body was later retrieved from a river by police.
“These cases involve the criminal conduct of three members of EMPD, and they are from a former team, which was called SWAT, which was headed by Brigadier Mkhwanazi.”
