Three former nurses in KwaZulu-Natal are under investigation for alleged insurance policy fraud linked to a patient.
The family of late Nduduzo Mbatha has opened a criminal case against the trio.
It's alleged that the nurses took out insurance policies on Mbatha, who was a patient at the Applebosch Hospital, without his family's knowledge or permission.
The nurses opted to resign when they were approached by the Department of Health about the allegations.
“Upon receiving the complaint, the hospital management engaged the nurses, who denied the allegations,” said department spokesperson Nathi Oliphant.
“They were instructed to submit written statements but refused to do so. The nurses subsequently submitted 24-hour resignations.”
Oliphant said the matter is now being dealt with by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU)).
“Due to the seriousness of the matter, the department has referred the matter to the Special Investigating Unit for a full internal investigation while SAPS [South African Police Service] conducts the criminal probe. The department is cooperating fully with all authorities and will not comment further.”
