The Drakenstein Municipality says its newly revised homeless people policy aims to help reunite homeless individuals with their families.
The policy, updated in August, introduces a structured and voluntary reintegration approach that prioritises dignity.
Municipal social workers first assess each person’s situation to understand what led them to the streets and whether they’re ready, and are welcome, to return home.
Officials also identify candidates for public employment and skills development programmes to help them rebuild their lives.
Senior social development officer, Geduld Veldsman, said that after reunification, the municipality provides counselling and guidance to ensure a smooth transition.
"We maintain the up-to-date database of people living on the streets and actively support them through our homeless policy. This is an ongoing initiative, and the homeless people must really have a desire to go back home and to be reunited with their families. That will ensure that they are up to date and they will not end up on the streets again."
