Cricket South Africa must establish a women’s franchise league if it hopes to take home the silverware, says Naidoo, who recently returned from the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, which saw India defeat South Africa in what was described as a 'final for the ages'.

Naidoo says it was historic; the first final without England or Australia.

“I had never experienced a feeling like that in my entire career. The sheer joy, the passion, those emotions, ” she says.

Naidoo is particularly full of praise for the Proteas Women's semifinal victory against England.

“That was the greatest ever knock played by a South African in a World Cup (Laura Wolvaardt). The way she paced her innings, and in the end, it was like the fighter came out of the gate and she stormed into those last 10 overs and swung hard."

Despite losing in the final, Naidoo emphasises the tremendous progress the team has made, crediting coach Mandla Mashimbyi for his transformative leadership and trust in the players.

“While they may not have had the silverware, this is a sign of things to come."

Naidoo says that there is a great need for a women’s franchise league similar to India’s WPL.

Consistent exposure to high-pressure situations will give the players a competitive edge.

“The 2020 semifinal against Australia, where they were so disappointed, sparked the most incredible change in Indian cricket, the WPL. Go into that final [against South Africa] and look at how many of those Indian players play in the WPL.

“Hats off to Cricket South Africa, the most progressive sports federation for women’s sport in the country, but we need a franchise league."
