EMPD's Mkhwanazi confirms he'll appear before Madlanga Commission

Acting EMPD head, Julius Mkhwanazi, has confirmed to EWN that he will be appearing before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in due course.

Mkhwanazi is accused of having run a rogue unit within EMPD that were complicit in several crimes ranging from murder to theft, fraud and corruption. 

Despite criminal investigations being opened, with several of Mkhwanazi’s EMPD officers arrested by members of IPID, none have been taken to task to date.

Mkhwanazi is being painted as a law unto himself, despite being fingered in cases of serious misconduct and criminal activities. 

He is accused of enjoying political protection from former Ekurhuleni city manager, Imogen Mashazi, as well as the head of human resources and legal. 

This is according to retired EMPD deputy commissioner, Revo Spies, who concluded his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday afternoon.

He claims during that a process to vet senior EMPD officials, Mkhwanazi refused to be vetted. 

"Mkhwanazi, at that stage, blatantly refused and said he will not be vetted and he is exempted from being vetted. That is actually the words he used: 'He is exempted from being vetted' - it’s not part of his contract."

A 2023 report by IPID found that Mkhwanazi should face disciplinary action after he illegally signed off on two unlawful agreements with alleged criminal mastermind and tenderprenuer, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.

The agreements would allow Matlala’s private security company vehicles to use blue lights, an infringement of the National Road Traffics Act.
