ANC will grant Mchunu space to address alleged links to Matlala

The African National Congress (ANC) said it will grant its senior member, Senzo Mchunu, space to address alleged links to suspected criminal Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

On Tuesday, the party approved Mchunu’s request to step back from his party responsibilities for the time being.

This means Mchunu will no longer participate his ANC national executive committee (NEC) duties while he awaits the outcome of the Madlanga Commission.

It has been four months since KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused Mchunu of misconduct during an explosive media briefing.

Mchunu recently asked the ANC’s NEC for permission to step ack from his party duties while he addressed the allegations against him.

The party initially refused, saying Mchunu will only step back if he’s criminally charged in the court of law.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the party has reversed its decision, agreeing that Mchunu should temporarily step back from his NEC responsibilities.

“In the light of the commission’s work and what it requires on him, it is practically impossible not to agree to that particular requestion.”

So far, the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard testimony from senior police officials, most of whom have said Mchunu had no legal authority to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola also told the commission that Mchunu became visibly angry when he was questioned about the motive behind the disbandment.
