The African National Congress (ANC) said that national executive committee (NEC) member Senzo Mchunu is not above the party’s step aside rule and other internal processes amid scrutiny of his alleged involvement in political interference in police structures.
Mchunu was placed on special leave as police minister earlier in 2025 following allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that he interfered in high-profile criminal investigations.

He is now among other officials under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption.
Last week, Mchunu handed over his digital devicesto the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) as part of an ongoing investigation.
While he continues with his ANC duties, the party said Mchunu has indicated his willingness to step aside from organisational work if he is formally charged.
“As a movement rooted in renewal and ethical leadership, the ANC reiterates that once a member is criminally charged, they voluntarily step aside from their responsibilities until the conclusion of such matters. The ANC continues to monitor developments, and the NEC will revisit its discussion should new developments arise that warrant further consideration.”
