The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has sent its heartfelt condolences to the family of former Western Cape Speaker Sharna Fernandez.

Fernandez reportedly passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday night.

She began her community work in 2011, working with a network of community organisations.

In 2014, she became a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament and later served as speaker.

In 2019, she was appointed the Western Cape minister of social development.

DA Western Cape leader Tertuis Simmers said the party is deeply saddened by her passing.

“Even after retiring from politics in 2024, she continued humanitarian work while pursuing a new path in real estate. Our heartfelt condolences go to her mother, her son and her entire family. We hold them in our thoughts and prayers in this difficult time. May they find comfort and strength in days ahead.”
