Police in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have seized counterfeit and illicit goods worth R30 million.
In the past two weeks, a multi-disciplinary team, including the counterfeit, contraband and illicit goods unit, conducted search and seizures at targeted shops and storage facilities.
Some of the items confiscated include clothes, footwear, pharmaceuticals, tobacco products, toys, electronic products, food, insecticides, and cell phones.
In KwaZulu-Natal, five suspects were arrested during these operations.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said they have been charged with contravening the Tobacco Products Control Act, violating immigration laws, and possession of a gambling machine.
“The SAPS extends its sincere appreciation to all participating departments and partners for their continued collaboration and commitment to combating counterfeit, contraband, and illicit goods.”
