The African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League (ANCWL) is calling on the government to implement stricter parole regulations for individuals convicted of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
The league held a media briefing on Sunday afternoon on the sidelines of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Germiston.
It has expressed concern about the slow progress in tackling the ongoing abuse of women and children.
ANCWL's Secretary-General Nokuthula Nqaba said GBVF remains a thorn in the side of the government.
Nqaba reiterated the league's comprehensive demands: "We reiterate our call, as submitted in a comprehensive memorandum to both the Presidency and the National Assembly, which calls for the following: To speed up the process on the review of the Sexual Offences Act."
She emphasised that the law must protect victims of GBVF.
"No bail may be considered in respect of offences of GBVF and femicide. We want enhanced training for law enforcement and a minimum life sentence to be imposed if an accused is convicted of GBVF."
