Africa’s largest retailer, Shoprite, launched a new digital recruitment platform designed to connect job seekers with employment opportunities within their local communities.
The platform focuses on matching candidates with positions within a 7-kilometre radius of their homes.
Shoprite Enterprise and Governmental Relations Executive Maude Modise says the retailer currently employs nearly 170,000 people, and this is part of its efforts to forge stronger relationships within the communities.
The initiative addresses two critical needs: reducing commuting costs and saving valuable time.
"If you employ people closer to where they live, it becomes cheaper for them to get to work. Also, you save time and don't have to commute for long hours. You show up differently when you get to work," says Modise.
The platform, developed in partnership with a local SMME OTB Group, is supported by Shoprite Next Capital, the Group’s enterprise and supplier development division.
Modise says key innovation is the geotagging functionality on the platform that keeps applicants' information in the database for future matching with relevant positions.
“Down the line, when other vacancies come through, because of the geotagging, you will then be given another opportunity.”
The user-friendly platform is accessible via WhatsApp on 072 773 4335, QR codes on in-store posters, and the Shoprite website.
