Some demonstrators at the nationwide shutdown at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg said they need more tangible solutions to end the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Non-profit organisation Women for Change is spearheading a nationwide demonstration on Friday, urging all participants to wear black in commemoration of all victims.

They are also urged to lie down for 15 minutes, each minute representing the women who are killed daily in the country.

Demonstrators in their black attire, with splashes of purple, are slowly gathering at the historic Constitution Hill.

Various international and local civil organisations have joined the fight in solidarity with women in South Africa.

Many are confronted with the grim reality of women being murdered every day.

The demonstrators are bout to observe a moment of silence for all who have lost their lives to GBV.
