Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said he’s satisfied with the city’s efforts to clean up the Nasrec precinct, where the G20 Leaders’ Summit is underway.
Morero has been subject to criticism, with some saying he struggled to get his house in order ahead of the summit.
In March, President Cyril Ramaphosa told city officials he wouldn’t want to welcome international visitors to a dirty Johannesburg.
Sunday is the final day of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, following months of preparation by the government to host the event.
Faulty traffic lights, non-functional streetlights, potholes, and litter are among issues that left President Cyril Ramaphosa deeply dissatisfied with Johannesburg.
Ramaphosa even referred to it as a “dark city” after finding himself in the CBD, where he was taken aback to see that none of the streetlights were working.
Morero said despite the growing pressure, he believes the city made a significant effort to clean up the Nasrec precinct.
“Where I am, I am satisfied with what we are beginning to see. The improvements and the changes is what we are seeing to ensure that service delivery is being carried.”
Morero added that the city’s clean-up initiatives will continue well beyond the G20 summit.
